Maintenance

I routinely perform maintenance to instrument bows such as cleaning and removing rosin, repolishing, replacement of lappings and leather thumb-grips (bands) as well as ensuring the tensioning mechanism is working correctly. I am capable of performing all types of bow maintenance, ensuring that each task is done with care to preserve the bow’s authenticity.

Please enquire for further information and quotations for work required.

Cleaning

Bow sticks should be cleaned of rosin dust after each use using a soft cloth. The bow should be tensioned to do this, as you only want to wipe the dust off the stick and not the hair. If rosin dust is allowed to build up, it can be difficult to remove and, depending upon the bow’s finish. Removal of such a build-up will often result in the need for repolishing the bow.

I am able to offer a bow cleaning service and can advise on sensitive repolishing if required.

Lappings and Leather Thumb-Grips

The lapping and leather thumb-grip on your bow is important for several reasons. It protects the wood of the bow stick from wear from use, it improves your grip on the bow and it helps balance the weight of the bow, making it more comfortable to hold and play. The leather thumb-grip provides a soft, cushioned area for the thumb to rest, which reduces strain and makes playing for extended periods more comfortable.

I am able to replace your lappings and leather thumb-grips to match the existing lapping, in order to keep the original weight and balance, or to make adjustments if required.

Tensioning Mechanism

Over time, the parts of the bow used to tension the hair can wear or suffer from rust or corrosion. The frog should sit closely to the bow stick, as excess movement can quickly cause damage to the stick. Movement can be caused by wear in the stick, the eyelet or the screw.

I am able to find the cause of any problems in the tensioning mechanism and remedy these before damage is caused.
